    Get PDF
Islamization of science has become a debatable issue among Muslim scholars since 1970's. This debate emerged due to the crisis of modern Western science that views a dichotomy between science and religion. To date, there have been many prominent Muslim scholars from the West and the East who discuss this dichotomy based on their understanding and expertise. This paper aims to report a study that analyzes the discourse of Islamization of knowledge from the perspective of four Malaysian Muslim scholars, namely Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, Osman Bakar, Shaharir Mohamad Zain and Wan Mohd Nor Wan Daud. The selection of scholars are in line with their scholarship and contribution to the discourse of science both nationally and internationally. Based on interviews and analysis of documents written by the four scholars, four terminologies that structure the discourse of Islamization of knowledge have been identified. The four terminologies the paradigm of Tawheed, indigenization of science and technology, philosophy of Islam and issues of securalism. It is found that that the core philosophy and responses of these scholars in Islamization of science are very relevant in all domains of knowledge. The paper also highlights that their contributions to the discourse of Islamization of science have significant impact not only in Malaysia, but also in a variety of disciplines across the Muslim world

Effective management of human resource development in an organizationcan facilitate the achievement of its goals. In response to the challenges and expectations of the 21st century, institutions of higher education (IHEs) particularly, need to embrace transformational change in order to survive and maintain its excellence. This paper reports part of a research project that explored the perceived common practices of learning organization practices (LOPs) that have driven transformational change in a particular IHE, namely the University Technical Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). A survey questionnaire adapted from Learning Organisation Practices Profile (O’Brien, 1994), consisting of twelve LOPs was utilized to explore how far the LOPs have become common practices at the university. A probability stratified sampling was adopted and guided by Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size estimation, a total of 306 samples comprising of executives, management staff, academics and support staff have been collected from a population of 1521. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 17 for Windows was used to analyze the samples. Based on the analysis of the mean scores of the twelve LOPs, it was found that the LOPs practices were beginning to become common practices at UTeM, although they have yet to be institutionalized. The common LOPs were the flow of information, collaborative and cooperative work environment and individual and team development through work experience. However, staff development particularly the rewards and recognition was perceived as the least common practice. These findings highlighted the significance of developing human resource by cultivating the culture of learning organization. Keywords: human resource development, learning organization practices, transformational change, institutions of higher educatio

The borderless and dynamic globalization environment has forced universities to operate in a more complex and competitive higher education landscape. Hence, it is important for universities to function as learning organizations to ensure their survival, be resilient and achieve sustainable growth especially in the era of Industry 4.0. This study, which used the case study method involving Malaysian public universities, intended to investigate the implementation of learning organization practices as main drivers. Data were collected by conducting interviews involving eight respondents from each university and were analysed qualitatively. The study sample comprised three categories of human resource personnel, namely executives, management staff and academic staff. Findings show that the universities had managed their three subsystems, namely leadership, work system and structure, as well as resilient performance and staff development, at different levels. Among the three subsystems, work system and structure were identified to be at the highest level, followed by leadership and finally, resilient performance and staff development. The seven learning organization practices which were information flow, organizational climate, individual/group development, individual/group practices, vision and mission staff achievement and feedback found to be main drivers among the human resources personnel. Conversely, five practices that were yet to become common learning organization practices were executive practices, work systems and organizations, training and education, management practices, as well as reward and recognition. Universities that function as learning organizations assume learning to be a catalyst for the development of resilient human resources. Therefore, the university is able to survive and sustain its dynamics in a competitive environment in a higher education system, especially in the era of Industry 4.0. This paper may have some direct implications towards the industrial 4.0 (IR4.0) movements in Human Resources in Malaysia which able to provide new insight into the exploration of the idea through the practice of learning organization
